Course Overview

STEMLINC Video Conferencing: During this fact finding mission, students will be transported on a virtual dive into the coral reef and predator exhibits of Reef HQ Aquarium. Includes information delivered live by a scuba diver in the tank.  Each dive is a unique experience depending on the creatures encountered in the tank.   Students are able to question the diver as he moves around the creatures on the reef.  Book early to avoid disappointment.

Background Information:

A reef is a ridge of material at or near the surface of the ocean.  Reefs can occur naturally.  Natural reefs are made of rocks or the skeletons of small animals called corals.  Australia is home to one of the most fascinating reefs in the world, The Great Barrier Reef. Reef HQ Aquarium is situated on the GBR and is very experienced in the delivery of VC programs to school students.

Learning Intentions

In this program students will:

  • Investigate elements of a diverse reef ecosystem
  • Develop an awareness of the greatest conservation threats facing our coral reefs
  • Learn about interdependency of creatures and plants living on the reef

Activities

In this program students will:

  • Virtually accompany a diver as he swims through the reef, see what he sees with the opportunity to ask him individual questions.
  • Hear about facts and details on the Great Barrier Reef delivered by a Reef HQ team member and supported with images, video clips and interactive questions.

Victorian Curriculum

Science:

  • Levels 3-4: Living things can be grouped on the basis of observable features and can be distinguished from non-living things (VCSSU057)
  • Level 3-4: With guidance, identify questions in familiar contexts that can be investigated scientifically and predict what might happen based on prior knowledge (VCSIS065)
  • Levels 5-6: Living things have structural features and adaptations that help them to survive in their environment (VCSSU074)
  • Levels 5-6: Interactions between organisms can be described in terms of food chains and food webs and can be affected by human activity (VCSSU093)
