Course Overview

STEMLINC VIdeo Conferencing:  Spark your students’ curiosity with invertebrates. Meet some invertebrates and discover their unique superpowers and learn funny, fascinating and unforgettable facts about them. Compare invertebrate features and discover some interesting ways invertebrates sense the world. Allow your students to explore their interest of everyday invertebrates whilst being actively engaged in discovering concepts such as camouflage and metamorphosis through movement and song. Continue your investigation of the many incredible invertebrates at home and at school.  (Please note: This video conference is a stand-alone program and should not be undertaken if you are have already booked either the onsite program ‘Minibeasts’, or the outreach program ‘Investigating Minibeast parts’, as they cover some of the same content.) Background Information:

Invertebrates are fascinating and diverse creatures, from their adaptations to their lifecycle, they are a great animal for students to investigate. They are the unsung heroes of the ecosystem, assisting in all areas from pollination to decomposition. Invertebrates inhabit almost all places and make up the majority of animal species on earth. They’re small, but they have a huge impact on our planet!

No prior knowledge required.

Learning Intentions:

In this program students will:

  • Compare and contrast invertebrate body parts.
  • Discover how different body parts of various invertebrates link with their functions.
  • Compare the senses of particular invertebrates and discover the interesting body parts used for these senses.
  • Understand the meaning of the term camouflage and metamorphosis.
  • Learn the stages of a butterfly’s life cycle.
  • Discover how important invertebrates are in our environment.
  • Learn how to identify and help invertebrates in your local area.

Activities:

In this program students will:

  • Observe a variety of invertebrates
  • Move around like various invertebrates
  • Observe a live Spiny Leaf Insect and learn about the adaptations of this unique animal
  • Act out the life cycle of a butterfly.
  • Sing and move to the Butterfly Metamorphosis song

Victorian Curriculum:

Science – Biological Sciences

  • Living things have a variety of external features and live in different places where their basic needs, including food, water and shelter, are met (VCSSU042)
  • Living things grow, change and have offspring similar to themselves (VCSSU043)
