Year Levels: 4 – 6

Duration: 60 minutes

STEM in a box: No

Background Information:

Discover how the various types of fossils are formed, found and used to unlock secrets from the past.  Experts draw from the museum fossil archives to engage students in discussion and use evidence to illustrate their responses to the any questions that students pose during the session.

Prior Knowledge:

No prior knowledge is required.

Learning Intentions:

In this program students will:

  • explore how fossils are formed, found and used as scientific indicators
  • understand the role of the palaeontologist in interpreting fossil evidence
  • experience behind the scenes at a working museum and how fossils are categorised and stored

Activities:

In this video conference students will:

  • Interact during Q & A with the expert educational scientists live from the William Tyrrell Museum in Canada
  • Decide the likely predator based on real fossil evidence
  • Comprehend how the size of fossils can be used to predict the size of extinct species

Victorian Curriculum:

Science – Biological Science

  • The growth and survival of living things are affected by the physical conditions of their environment (VCSSU075)
  • Living things can be grouped on the basis of observable features and can be distinguished from non-living things (VCSSU057)
  • Living things have structural features and adaptations that help them to survive in their environment (VCSSU074)

Science – Chemical Science

  • Natural and processed materials have a range of physical properties; these properties can influence their use (VCSSU060)

Science – Analysing and evaluating

  • Reflect on an investigation, including whether a test was fair or not (VCSIS071)

Science – Questioning and predicting

  • With guidance, pose questions to clarify practical problems or inform a scientific investigation, and predict what the findings of an investigation might be based on previous experiences or general rules (VCSIS082)
