STEMex Video Conferencing: Ask an expert! This program gives students the opportunity to interact with palaeontologists live from the William Tyrrell Museum in Canada . Students are encouraged to ask curriculum-based questions, engage in discussions with their scientists, and find out the latest in palaeontology directly from those actually conducting the research! Background Information: 

Discover how the various types of fossils are formed, found and used to unlock secrets from the past.  Experts draw from the museum fossil archives to engage students in discussion and use evidence to illustrate their responses to the any questions that students pose during the session.

Prior Knowledge:

No prior knowledge is required.

Learning Intentions:

In this program students will:

• explore how fossils are formed, found and used as scientific indicators
• understand the role of the palaeontologist in interpreting fossil evidence
• experience behind the scenes at a working museum and how fossils are categorised and stored

Activities:

In this video conference students will:

• Interact during Q & A with the expert educational scientists live from the William Tyrrell Museum in Canada
• Decide the likely predator based on real fossil evidence
• Comprehend how the size of fossils can be used to predict the size of extinct species
