STEMLinc Video Conference: Bug catchers grab your nets! Create your very own museum style bug collection box using the colourful stickers provided in your STEM-in-a-box kits. Our very special guest, Tasmanian Entomologist, Shasta Henry will lead these engaging, fun sessions. Get up close and personal with some fabulous insects to appreciate their unique features. Discuss some of Dr. Henry’s favourite insects and how to distinguish them from similar species. (Image: Shasta Henry)

You will receive hands-on materials and a teacher guide for this session.
Background Information:
More than one million different species of insect have been described to date. They are the most abundant group of animals in the world and live in almost every habitat. Insects have lived on earth for more than 350 million years. Entomology is crucial to our understanding of human disease, agriculture, evolution, ecology and biodiversity.
Prior Knowledge:
No prior knowledge needed.
Learning Intentions:
In this program students will:
- Learn to spot the differences between pairs of commonly mistaken insects
- Gain an understanding of insect bodily parts and their functions
Activities:
In this program students will:
- Observe a number of Sashta’s favourite insects and bugs and learn what distinguishes them
- Categorise a variety of insect stickers into their very own bug box
- Use hand movements to replicate insect wing folding and eating behaviours
- Create their own insect by selecting from a range of common insect body parts
