Terrific Alaskan Tidepools

Course Access: Lifetime
Course Overview

STEMLinc Video Conferencing: Connect your class live to the Alaskan Sea-life Center.  Take a walk through the Alaskan intertidal zone pools and meet face to face with their tough and mysterious local invertebrates.

Yr Level: 3-4

Duration: 1 hour

STEM-in-a-box: Yes

Background Information:

Miles of rocky beaches, big tides, and waters that teem with marine life all make Alaska a great place to go tide-pooling. In Southeast Alaska alone, scientists have counted at least 170 species of macroscopic (able to be seen with the naked eye) invertebrates in the intertidal zones, and doubtless many more exist.

Prior Knowledge:

No prior knowledge necessary.  Students can already have a basic knowledge of invertebrates as the Alaskan species will be quite different.

Learning Intentions:

In this program students will:

  • Discuss how natural tidal processes cause changes to Earth’s surface.
  • Use contact and non-contact forces to describe interactions between objects.
  • Group living things based on observable features and distinguish them from non-living things.
  • Describe relationships that assist the survival of living things.

Activities:

In this video conference students will:

  • Explore the ecosystems of the tidal pools at the Alaskan Sea-life Center
  • (Under development)

Victorian Curriculum:
